How to become a trainee notary
Obtaining the status of trainee notary
The Romanian Notarial Institute organises, for the posts approved by the Council of the Union, the examination or competition for obtaining the status of trainee notary. It consists of a written, theoretical paper on the syllabus approved by the Council of the Union. The minimum pass mark is 7.00.
If you are declared successful, you will take up a place within the limit of the posts approved by the Council of the Union for the Chamber where you filed your application to sit the examination or competition. You may file your application with only one Chamber.
The 2-year traineeship at the Romanian Notarial Institute
After passing the examination or competition, as a trainee notary you will follow, for 2 years, the theoretical and practical training courses organised by the Romanian Notarial Institute, bearing the training costs set by the Institute. Your theoretical training will consist of attending the courses organised by the Romanian Notarial Institute.
The practical training will take place in a notarial office designated by the Board of Directors, with the agreement of the supervising public notary. Once the 2 years of the traineeship are complete, you will have to sit and pass the final examination organised by the Romanian Notarial Institute.
The final examination
The final examination consists of two written papers, one theoretical and one practical, on the competition syllabus. The minimum average pass mark is 7.00, with not less than 5.00 in each paper. You are entitled to sit at most two sessions of the final examination.
Appointment to office
After the final examination, the UNNPR Council validates the results, and the successful candidates then state their preferences for public notary posts, in order of the averages obtained, among the places within the Chamber where they sat the examination or competition for the status of trainee notary and within the limit of the places set out in the updating order issued by the Minister of Justice.
The Minister of Justice will then appoint you as a public notary by order, you will take the oath and you will be able to take the steps needed to begin practising.
