On 19 March, the first session of this year’s General Assembly of the Council of the Notariats of the European Union (CNUE) took place in Brussels, marking an important event on the agenda of the notarial profession at European level.
The Romanian notariat was represented by Notary Public Laura Badiu, President of the National Union of Notaries Public of Romania, together with Notary Public Stila Cocea. The Romanian delegation actively participated in discussions on current European legal projects with an impact on the profession.
The event brought together representatives of the 22 CNUE member notariats within a framework of European dialogue and cooperation, chaired by the President of the organisation, Mr Roland Wadge, a Maltese notary.
This first session of the CNUE General Assembly represented an important step towards strengthening cooperation and adapting the notarial profession to the legal challenges of the future at European level.
CNUE also organised the exhibition “From Ink to Cloud: Securing the Transmission of Heritage Through the Centuries”, hosted by the European Parliament from 16 to 20 March 2026. The exhibition invites the public on a journey through European history, told through remarkable notarial documents preserved in the national archives of CNUE member notariats. Covering the period from the 13th to the 20th century, the exhibition features, among others, the coronation document of King João I (Portugal, 1385), the handwritten will of Christopher Columbus (Italy, 1498), and the estate inventory of composer Johann Strauss (Austria, 1900). Romania is represented at the exhibition by the will of the distinguished diplomat and statesman Nicolae Titulescu, drawn up in 1940.
Several digital panels featuring interactive scenarios are also on display, aiming to raise public awareness of digital assets and their transmission post-mortem.
The Romanian notariat’s international participation reflected a rich and diverse agenda, bringing together the profession’s active present with its values, tradition, continuity and modern perspectives.
